stract. With the rapid development of Internet of Vehicles (IoV), the applications of traffic congestion detection based on Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) are proposed and widely used. However, location privacy leakage has become a serious problem in traffic congestion detection based on traffic voting, because vehicles will upload traffic congestion information and their own locations to the traffic management server. In this paper, we propose a decentralized weighted vote traffic congestion detection framework, which allows vehicles can safely participate in the traffic voting, under location privacy protection, and accurately obtain the traffic congestion status of the road. Specifically, we introduce blockchain technology into traffic congestion detection, and apply smart contract to replace the traditional trusted third party. We propose a weighted voting scheme, and set the weight of votes depending on the distance between the vehicle’s current position and the location of congestion. The security analysis result shows that our framework can satisfy the above requirements. Finally, the experiment results demonstrate that our framework is efficient and practical.

Introduction

In recent years, Intelligent Traffic System (ITS) has attracted wide attention due to the rapid development of Internet of Vehicles (IOV), which is aiming to establish a large, functional, real-time, accurate, efficient traffic management system [1]. Meanwhile, as an important part of ITS, traffic congestion detection has been widely studied. Traffic congestion is due to unbalanced traffic flow or insufficient traffic infrastructure. Analysis and detection of traffic congestion can improve the use efficiency of roads and reduce the costs of traffic congestion [6]. At present, traffic congestion detection has been widely used in ITS, such as intelligent traffic signal light management [21], traffic monitoring [2]. The traffic congestion detection based on traditional ITS requires participating vehicles to upload their location and current traffic condition information to the server of the traffic management department. the concept of vehicles’ cooperation with the traffic management department to manage traffic congestion by voting. In protocol vehicles must trust the central authority. However, the server may collect vehicles’ location information, infer their travel chain, expose movement path, and cause serious privacy problems. At the same time, for the traffic congestion of a road section, most schemes do not take into consideration the impact of the distance between the vehicle’s location and the location of the congestion on the final result. This strategy will bring a lag effect and fail to provide real-time information about each route to road users [13]. In recent years, several related schemes a
