A Millennium Start
In this New Millennium Year, we relaunch the new EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing (JASP). The research and technology development paradigm has changed as we all witnessed the emerging worldwide high-tech new economics, especially in the information technology area. Our research has brought down the gap between fundamental, basic problems and applied, application-oriented issues. In certain sense, we as researchers can no longer excel without keeping applications in mind to reflect the need of the industry. As much so, many publications of the old paradigm still maintains its theory centric approach that keep it even farer away from the demand of practicing engineers and researchers. There was an urging sense among ourselves to bring us closer to the true world. Indeed, most of us have been doing so for some time. Signal processing has become a field of diverse applications in almost every scientific and engineering discipline that affects our daily life. As such the overall aim of EURASIP JASP is to bring science and applications together with emphasis on practical aspects of signal processing in new and emerging technologies. To make an impact, EURASIP JASP will emphasize on developing special issues, guest edited by experts, on emerging and important technological and scientific topics. Such a focus treatment will bring together comprehensive tutorials for readers unfamiliar with the subject and state-of-the-art new results to facilitate new research directions and ideas. Thus far, we have an outstanding editorial board and many excellent special issues in the coming future such as • • • • • • • •
Nonlinear Signal and Image Processing Emerging Applications of Multimedia Data Hiding Space-Time Coding and its Applications Applied Visual Inspection 3G Wireless Communications and Beyond Implementation of DSP and Communication Systems Signal Processing for 3D Imaging and Virtual Reality Joint Audio-Visual Speech Processing
There are many more exciting issues to come. During this transition period, there will be four issues published in year 2001. Starting from year 2002, EURASIP JASP will become a monthly publication. Finally, I hope you will soon find that EURASIP JASP is an important source for you to learn what the emerging, state-of-the-art signal processing issues and applications are, as well as consider EURASIP JASP one of the premier journals for you to publish in. All in all, your continuing and new support will be essential. K. J. Ray Liu Editor-in-Chief
