Intended as a think piece, this small book explores the history of early America—in its colonial, revolutionary, and early national periods—through the lenses of imperialism, colonialism, and genocide. It argues that early America is best understood as a supplanting society driven by a settler fixation to move onto Indian ancestral homelands, seize Indian lands and resources, and then both displace and supplant the existing Indigenous inhabitants. Readers will find my small book distinctive in a number of ways. Firstly, it provides a fresh perspective on early American history to a wide range of readers, challenging the still strongly held notion of an American exceptionalism (the idea that America’s historical development was different from that of other countries).
