The i m p o r t a n t f e a t u r e of the e x p l o s i o n - c l a d d i n g p r o c e s s is the f o r m a t i o n of a m e t a l l u r g i c a l bond, an i n t e r f a c e ~-3 o r a bond zone, 4 b e t w e e n the two c l a d m e t a l s . R e l a t i v e l y l i t t l e r e s e a r c h h a s b e e n done to d a t e with a view to c h a r a c t e r i z i n g t h e n a t u r e of t h e bond r e g i o n in any e x p l o s i o n - c l a d m e t a l s y s t e m . 4-8 In p r e v i o u s s t u d i e s %6 the e m p h a s i s was p l a c e d on s p e c i m e n s a n n e a l e d s u b s e q u e n t to c l a d d i n g in o r d e r to o b v i a t e the e x p e r i m e n t a l d i f f i c u l t i e s i n h e r e n t in s t u d y i n g the high p l a s t i c d e f o r m a t i o n of the bond r e gions in the a s - c l a d condition. In o t h e r s t u d i e s , %7 i n v e s t i g a t i o n s of the bond r e g i o n in the C u / C u p o l y c r y s t a l l i n e s y s t e m , in the a s - c l a d condition, did not l e a d to c o n c l u s i v e r e s u l t s a s to the s t r u c t u r e and the n a t u r e of that r e g i o n , i.e. w h e t h e r it is a bond zone 4 o r a p l a n a r interface.7 T h e m a i n p u r p o s e of the p r e s e n t s t u d y h a s been to c h a r a c t e r i z e the bond r e g i o n of e x p l o s i v e l y c l a d C u / C u s i n g l e c r y s t a l s f r o m the m o r p h o l o g i c a l and s t r u c t u r a l point of view, on the b a s i s of o b s e r v a t i o n s by m e a n s of t r a n s m i s s i o n e l e c t r o n m i c r o s c o p e (TEM). T h e s i n g l e c r y s t a l was u s e d a s a tool for c o m i n g to a b a s i c u n d e r s t a n d i n g of the bond n a t u r e , b e c a u s e it is f r e e of the i n t e r a c t i o n of g r a i n b o u n d a r i e s enJ.
