Abstract Ensuring fail-proof security for the group keys in pairwise key distribution is one of the challenging problems in wire less sensor networks. The proposed system introduces an algorithm for ensuring an efficient and secure group key management in the area of wireless sensor networks. The system is called multitier key distribution that not only secures group communication, but also secures the data aggregation in wireless sensor networks. Supported by simple and yet robust empirical and mathematical modelling, the proposed system offers a novelty in key distribution and management techniques for large-scale wireless sensor networks to resist the majority of potential threats. The outcome of the study was evaluated with the most recent work in a similar direction to show that the technique offers less time and space complexity in ensuring a robust key management technique.

1 Introduction Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted the attention of the research community for more than two decades owing to their potential advantage in monitoring remote data as well as inherent issues in the operation. Because of the smaller availability of computational resources in the miniature sensor nodes and

wireless communication media, the wireless sensor network suffers from potential security risk factors [1]. Adopting a cryptographic technique can also have various limitations too; for example, (i) it can ensure an effective key management, but cannot jointly ensure the communication performance of the large-scale network, especially the time-critical applications in wireless sensor networks; (ii) cryptographic protocols work in a recursive manner with various iterative and complex steps of encryptions and thereby they give rise to both time and space complexity while working on secure group key management techniques; (iii) adoption of a cryptographic technique emphasizes a great deal on key generation but not much on ensuring a second layer of protection of the generated key in the case of different adversarial activities; and (iv) the conventional mechanism of broadcasting of the encrypted keys (as a mobile code) can be overheard by the malicious node. Hence, keeping all these issues in mind, the present paper introduces a technique of secure group key communication. Section 2 discusses some of the significant related research work followed by a discussion of problem identification in Sect. 3. Section 4 discusses the proposed system followed by algorithm implementation in Sect. 5. Finally, Sect. 6 makes some concluding remarks
