The idea for this book goes back a long way. And, in the end, it proved to be a timeconsuming and arduous affair to bring this idea to life. It involved travelling approximately 2000 km between the Mediterranean coast and the areas south of the Sahara from the perspective of the nineteenth century, when huge caravans and numerous European travellers were on the move, transporting goods and exploring the hitherto unknown desert areas. Its geographical location alone has made Libya a hub of trade between Europe and Africa since ancient times. Right up until the twentieth century, camels formed the basis
