Ternary and Higher Order Iron Phase Diagram Updates Ternary and higher order iron phase diagrams have been critically evaluated and published as a series of monographs by the cooperating societies: ASM International, Indian Institute of Metals, and Institute of Materials (UK). Updates on iron phase diagrams are published regularly in this journal. Stable carbide- and nitride-forming elements Nb, Ti, and V are added to steels to refine the grain size and improve the mechanical properties. These elements form fine carbonitride precipitates, which retard austenite recrystallization and inhibit subsequent grain growth during hot rolling. The ternary systems C-Fe-Nb, C-Fe-Ti, C-Fe-V, Fe-N-Nb, and Fe-N-Ti are updated. The limited information in the literature on the equilibrium composition of the carbonitrides in the quaternary systems C-Fe-N-Nb and C-Fe-N-Ti and in the quinary system C-Fe-N-Nb-Ti is reviewed. The last update on the senary system C-Fe-N-Nb-Ti-V reviews recent results of Inoue et al. on the coexistence of carbonitrides of different composition in austenite. This work was supported by the Indian Institute of Metals, Calcutta. V. Raghavan Editor Phase Diagrams of Ternary Iron Alloys Parts 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6
