PREFACE These are the proceedings of the Southern Illinois Algebra Conference.
The conference was held at the Southern Illinois
University at Carbondale on April 18 and 19, 1980 as part of the Special Week in Algebra, April 14-19, 1980. The conference was made possible through the interest, financial support and cooperation of the Department of Mathematics, College of Liberal Arts, Graduate School and Office of International Education at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. The conference format comprised a series of invited talks spread over the two days and open to all participants; these were followed by special sessions in the three areas of Lie algebras, Group Theory, and Partially Ordered Algebraic Structures at which contributed papers were presented and further discussions on the invited talks held.
There were approximately one hundred partici-
pants mostly from the United States and Canada.
A major theme of
the Lie algebras section was the virtually completed work of Prof. Richard Block of the University of California-Riverside and Dr. Robert Lee Wilson of Rutgers University, classifying the Simple Lie p-algebras of Rank 2.
The work will appear elsewhere, but a flavor
of their methods is provided by the paper of Robert Wilson which appears in these proceedings and is entitled "A "New" Proof of Kaplansky's Theorem on Simple Lie Algebras of Rank One."
The group
theory portion represented the annual meeting of the Mid-West Group Theory Conference. For various reasons several talks given during the algebra
IV
conference and special week in algebra do not appear in these proceedings.
As such a complete listing of all talks given is pre-
sented for the information this provides about the conference.
The
talks which do appear are generally expanded and/o
