Preface
This volume represents the proceedings of the Third Midwest Algebraic Qeometry Conference held at the University of Michigan on November 14-15, 1981. The conference included five one hour lectures of the invited speakers from outside of Midwest
A.
Bialynicki-Birula, D. Gieseker, N. Nygard
and P. Slodowy) and three 45 minutes lectures of the geometers from Midwest (D. Burns, C. Huneke and T. Kambayashi). The research articles included in the present volume represent all the lectures except those by A. Bialynicki-Birula and P. Slodowy (which will be published elsewhere). I would like to thank P. Slodowy for allowing me to include his survey article on a topic closely related to the one of his actual lecture. Following the example of the Proceedings of the First Midwest Algebraic Geometry Conference (Lecture Notes in Mahtematics, vol. 862, 1981) I included in this volume an article of one of the participants (N. Goldstein) which was not presented orally. It is my pleasure to thank all participants of the conference. I am also thankful to the National Science Foundation whose support made this meeting possible.
