This second edition was triggered 2 years ago when I received a picture by Giacomo Misuraca, sent to my smartphone by Margherita Caputo, co-author of Chap. 7. We both realised that part of the present work, which had been published a couple of months earlier, may need to be revised. Misuraca’s drawing, found in a 1900 book on a second-hand street market stall, depicted a construction aimed at determining the heights of the rings of the coffering of a half-spherical dome, a simpler and more detailed procedure than the one we had suggested for San Carlino in the mentioned chapter, and had selected among others for its good adherence to the surveyed data. We needed to try out this new (although older) procedure to check if the results were just as good. They were, and since the same method appeared to have been used in the nearby church of San Bernardo, we had to adopt it and adapt the subsequent steps of Borromini’s plan: Chap. 7 had now undergone major changes. The need to publish our revised version was put forward to Springer-Verlag, together with my suggestions for further extensions of the first edition, such as the case study of Perronet’s bridge at Neuilly, the
