Lack of efficacy during treatment of acute suppurative parotitis: case report A 42-day-old female infant exhibited lack of efficacy during treatment with amikacin and vancomycin for acute suppurative parotitis. The infant was hospitalised with hypotonic with increased work of breathing and a tender, erythematous left-sided preauricular facial swelling. Ultrasound scan showed swollen area showed left parotid gland. She was diagnosed with acute suppurative parotitis. She started receiving antibiotic therapy including IV vancomycin and amikacin [not all routes stated;dosages not stated]. However, despite therapy, she developed progressive swelling and erythema. Subsequently, she underwent drainage of mucoid fluid. A fluid culture showed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sensitive to vancomycin and clindamycin. She was treated with IV vancomycin and oral clindamycin. Within 14 days, complete resolution of clinical findings was noted. Hadizadeh T, et al. Neonatal Acute Suppurative Parotitis.
