Hypothyroidism, gastrointestinal reaction and headache: 5 case reports In a study of 84 patients (aged 61–82 years), conducted between March 2016 and May 2017 at the Beijing Hepingli Hospital, China, five patients [ages and sexes not stated] were described, who developed hypothyroidism, gastrointestinal reaction or headache during treatment with amlodipine, hydrochlorothiazide or valsartan for hypertension complicated by paroxysmal atrial fibrillation [routes not stated]. The patients, who had hypertension complicated by paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, were assigned to the control group (3 patients) and observation group (2 patients). All the patients received treatment with amlodipine [amlodipine besylate] 5 mg/tablet at a frequency of 1–2 tablets/day and hydrochlorothiazide 6.25 mg/tablet at a frequency of 2 tablets/day. The patients from the observation group additionally received valsartan 80 mg/capsule at a frequency of 1–2 capsules/day. Subsequently, the three patients from the control group developed adverse reactions comprising hypothyroidism (1 patient), gastrointestinal reaction (1 patient) and headache (1 patient). The remaining two patients from the observation group developed adverse reactions comprising hypothyroidism (1 patient) and gastrointestinal reaction (1 patient) [duration of treatments to reaction onsets not stated]. The treatment with amlodipine, valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide was withheld in all patients, which resulted in complete resolution of the adverse reactions. Author comment: "During the treatment, there were one case of hypothyroidism, one case of gastrointestinal reaction, and one case of headache in control group, with one case of hypothyroidism, one case of gastrointestinal reaction. . .in observation group." "In each group, the adverse reactions disappeared after drug withdrawal". Wang Y, et al.
