Abstract The machining methodologies of spiral bevel gears based on universal computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools open up a new way for the flexible and diversified machining of spiral bevel gears. In order to improve the information interrelatedness and traceability in isolated machining mode of spiral bevel gears based on universal CNC machine tools, a novel integrated design and machining mode of spiral bevel gears based on universal CNC machine tools is proposed in this paper, and the spiral bevel gears integrated design and machining scheme is established. On this basis, a communication control framework for spiral bevel gear integrated design and machining is set up, and an information integration management system for spiral bevel gears is developed, which achieve the information communication and integration management of the whole spiral bevel gear integrated design and machining process. Finally, the feasibility and practicability of the integrated design and machining mode and the information integration management system are verified by the integrated design and machining example of one kind of spiral bevel gears. The proposed integrated design and machining mode accomplishes the isolated-to-integrated transformation of spiral bevel gear machining mode based on universal CNC machine tools and meets the modern integrated design and machining demands for spiral bevel gears based on universal CNC machine tools.
