H. M. L E D B E T T E R R e c e n t s t u d i e s z-3 show that a u s t e n i t i c s t a i n l e s s s t e e l s with Mn and N s u b s t i t u t e d for Ni show a n o m a lous p h y s i c a l - p r o p e r t y / t e m p e r a t u r e b e h a v i o r . L e d b e t t e r ~ o b s e r v e d that F e ~ 2 1 C r - 6 N i - 9 M n e x h i b i t s e l a s t i c - c o n s t a n t a n o m a l i e s when cooled to about 130 K, and c o n j e c t u r e d that a p a r a m a g n e t i c - a n t i f e r r o m a g n e t i c (N~el) t r a n s i t i o n caused the a n o m a l i e s . Collings 2 and L e d b e t t e r v e r i f i e d the N ~ e l - t r a n s i t i o n e x p l a n a t i o n in studying the e l a s t i c c o n s t a n t s and m a g n e t i c s u s c e p t i b i l i t y of a s i m i l a r alloy, F e - 1 8 C r - 3 N i 13Mn, which b e h a v e s a n o m a l o u s l y upon cooling to about 190 K. N ~ e l - t r a n s i t i o n induced a n o m a l i e s o c c u r a l s o in F e - 2 2 C r - 1 3 N i - 5 M n 3 at t e m p e r a t u r e s n e a r 33 K. P r i m a r i l y , Mn content c o n t r o l s the a n o m a l o u s b e h a v i o r . 3 Higher Mn m e a n s a higher N6el t r a n s i t i o n t e m p e r a t u r e , TN, and l a r g e r e l a s t i c - c o n s t a n t changes at T N . Studying the l i m i t i n g c a s e - M n and N s u b s t i t u t e d c o m p l e t e l y for N i - b e c o m e s of c o n s i d e r a b l e i n t e r e s t . Such an alloy should show a high TN and a l a r g e , a n o m a l o u s e l a s t i c - c o n s t a n t change. A Soviet s t e e l - F e - 1 3 C r - 1 9 M n - - a p p r o x i m a t e s this l i m i t i n g case and t h e r e f o r e was studied.
