Abstract Multi-attribute group decision making (MAGDM) can be considered as the process of ranking alternatives or selecting an optimal alternative by many decision makers based on multiple criteria. By comparing any two alternatives pairwise, preference relations provide efficient ways to represent the preference degrees of decision makers. The aim of this paper is to introduce the notions of upward intuitionistic fuzzy preference relations from fuzzy information system and to study some properties of these relations. Further the series of upward intuitionistic fuzzy preference aggregation operators including the upward intuitionistic fuzzy preference weighted averaging ðUIFPWAÞ operator, upward intuitionistic fuzzy preference ordered weighted averaging ðUIFPOWAÞ operator and upward intuitionistic fuzzy preference hybrid averaging ðUIFPHAÞ operator and their related results are also investigated. We developed a MAGDM method based

1 Introduction In practical complex environment, when we encounter multi-attribute group decision problems, we often adopt information fusion operators [1–3], or calculate correlation coefficient and similarity [4–8], between the alternatives and the negative ideal solution, or use some existing decision methods [9, 10] to order all the alternatives and select the best choice. Among the above decision-making tools, more and more experts and scholars have been attracted to choose the optimal scheme through the existed decision-making methods. For the indeterminacy of decision makers and the decision-making issues, we always cannot give accuracy evaluation values of alternatives to select the best project in real MADM problems. To conquer this disadvantage, fuzzy set theory, as a tool to consider the uncertainty of environment and the fuzziness of human’s judgment, has been widely used in various fields since it was proposed by Zadeh [11]. The notion of intuition
