Introduction
For a quarter of a century now, and more particularly over the last decade, the thinking of Antoine-Augustin Cournot has inspired a growing literature embodied in two types of works. First, we find a number of studies by economists, published for the most part in scientific journals, which are often of considerable technical value with their proposals for concrete application of the economic models that Cournot developed primarily in his early writings. Then come the studies that spring from the history of ideas and epistemology: these are entirely devoted to a particular facet of Cournot’s work, either to place it in its scientific context or to discuss it on the basis of fundamental cognitive issues.
