Foreword

The purpose of this book is to provide easily accessible and readily understandable information related to arthropod-borne diseases. It contains 38 chapters written by more than 50 experts from several countries and provides information on vector and pathogen biology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention as well as ecology and epidemiology, topics essential to detect their occurrence and initiate timely intervention. The repeated evolution of blood feeding by wide variety of arthropods has resulted in their conflicting relationship with animals, including humans, by allowing them to serve as vectors of many pathogens, cause allergic reactions or provide a nuisance through their bites. Diseases caused by pathogens transmitted by arthropods such as malaria and dengue fever have strongly influenced human history and continue to be important in tropical and temperate countries.
