Adopted in 2005 by UNESCO’s 33rd General Conference, the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions affirms the political will and commitment of governments to protect and promote the widest possible range of cultural expressions as well as to promote fundamental freedoms of expression, information and communication. The fact that the Convention entered into force only 18 months after its adoption and was ratified over the subsequent 3 years by more than 110 states from all regions of the world attests to its importance and timeliness.
