Chronic kidney disease: case report A 60-year-old woman developed chronic kidney disease (CKD) due to the concomitant administration of aspirin and furosemide. The woman, who had underlying hypertension and type II diabetes mellitus, was admitted to the female general medicine ward of a hospital with chest pain and breathlessness. Her ongoing medications included atenolol, amlodipine and metformin. She was diagnosed with newonset acute left ventricular failure and ischaemic heart disease. Subsequently, her treatment was initiated with aspirin and furosemide [dosages and routes not stated] along with various other medications. An ultrasonography demonstrated grade 1 renal parenchymal disease, indicating CKD, which was considered as secondary to the reduced diuretic effectiveness of furosemide, induced by aspirin [time to reaction onset not stated]. She additionally developed hypotension due to oral enalapril 2.5mg twice daily tablets (which was administered on day 2 and day 3 of hospitalisation). The woman’s aspirin and furosemide therapies were continued for the whole duration of hospitalisation (all 6 days), whereas enalapril was discontinued on day 4 of hospitalisation. Thereafter, her BP improved [outcome of CKD not stated]. Author comment: "The patient diagnosed as chronic kidney disease in the middle of the treatment which was adverse reaction interaction between aspirin and furosemide." Reddy GK, et al.
