This project started when I worked on my dissertation and needed to figure out the conceptual framework for my project comparing events in 1848 and the US Civil War. Especially, David Armitage’s concept of three Atlantic worlds interested me. The idea of a comparative Atlantic study seemed to fit rather well with my transnational project. However, I eventually turned to the transnational methodology recently embraced by Civil War historians Paul Quigley and Andre Fleche that was more appropriate for what I was doing. Nevertheless, I remained interested in nineteenth-century Atlantic history. I was troubled that Atlantic historians had decided to end their narratives in 1825. Despite abandoning Atlantic history’s methodology for the dissertation, I decided to put some of my thought regarding the existence of a nineteenth-century Atlantic world on paper. When I first started, I envisioned an article-length essay pointing out some comparisons. My goal was primarily to put secondary literatures into conversation with each other, which remains an essential goal of the book.
