Sb and Mn-Sb a l l o y s . T h e o c c u r r e n c e of the s i m p l e cubic phase (a = 3.03A) r e p o r t e d by G l e s s e n et al, m r a p i d l y quenched N i - S b alloys (95 to 90 wt pet Sb) is c o n f i r m e d by the p r e s e n t work. The e q u i l i b r i u m p h a s e s p r e s e n t in the a s - q u e n c h e d alloys were identified by c o m p a r i n g the o b s e r v e d d i f f r a c t i o n p a t t e r n s with data d e r i v e d from the ASTM file and the o r i g i n a l r e f e r e n c e s d e s c r i b i n g the c r y s t a l s t r u c t u r e s . 7,s In addition to the d i f f r a c t i o n l i n e s c o r r e s p o n d i n g to CrSb2 and e l e m e n t a l a - S b , the diffraction p a t t e r n s of C r - S b quenched a l l o y s c o n t a i n i n g 88 to 94 pet Sb exhibited e x t r a l i n e s which could be i n t e r p r e t e d as a r i s i n g f r o m a s i m p l e cubic cell with a = 3.074A. 2 C o l u m n s 2 and 4 in T a b l e I give the o b s e r v e d s i n 0 v a l u e s and i n t e n s i t i e s d e r i v e d f r o m a s t e p - s c a n n e d C r - S b (90 pct) alloy. T h e sin20 and i n t e n s i t y v a l u e s c u r r e s p o n d i n g to a s i m p l e cubic cell ( a - P o - A h s t r u c t u r e ) ~ space group Prn3rn with 1 atom per unit c e l l in 1 (a): (0, 0, 0) with a = 3.07A a r e also given in T a b l e I. The a g r e e m e n t between the o b s e r v e d and c a l c u l a t e d i n t e n s i t i e s is s a t i s f a c t o r y . It should be pointed out that liquid quenched alloys have b e e n found ~ to exhibit s t r o n g s o l i d i f i c a t i o n t e x t u r e s and these m a y c a u s e the (100) r e f l e c t i o n to be s t r o n g e r than expected. The diffraction p a t t e r n s of r a p i d l y quenched M n - S b alloys containing 95 and 93 wt pct Sb had l i n e s c o r r e s p o n d i n g to ot-Sb and MnSb only. The d - s p a c i n g s of the a n t i m o n y l i n e s in these alloys indicated that some s m a l l s o l u b i l i t y of m a n g a n e s e in a n t i m o n y had o c c u r r e d . F o r r a p i d l y quenched alloys containing 90.3 to 88 wt pct Sb, e x t r a l i n e s of a new m e t a s t a b l e phase w e r e found in addition to the l i n e s c o
