Over the last 10 years, hackathons have become a real phenomenon. They started their success story many years ago in the USA and have since taken the whole world by storm. Hackathons are called the new “LAN parties” or “disruptive brainstorming.” Started as pure software development meetings, they can now be found in many different areas and industries. What used to take place in small groups and dark rooms can now be found in schools, universities as well as in companies and public authorities as professionally organized events. Where once only “nerds” could be found, today self-confident entrepreneurs, socially committed do-gooders, highly talented software developers, musicians, technology fans, and people who are simply looking for a new challenge gather. At hackathons, new technology should first be tried out in the shortest possible time, existing systems should be optimized and extende
