BCG-vaccine Axillary lymph node calcification: case report

An approximately 4-month old male infant had axillary lymph node calcification following vaccination with BCG-vaccine. At the age of 10 months, the fully vaccinated boy was admitted with respiratory distress. Following investigations, he was diagnosed with beriberi. During a routine physical examination, he was found to have a firm mass in the right axilla. On anamnesis, his parents reported that at about 4 months of age, the mass became palpable for the first time. Thereafter, it was progressively increased in the size and about one month before admission, it was stabilised. A chest radiograph showed a calcified right axillary mass with the typical appearance of lymph nodes. A chest radiograph performed at the age of 2 months, did not show any calcification. Hence, axillary lymph node calcification was attributed to vaccination with intradermal BCG-vaccine, which he received shortly after birth [dosage and time to reaction onset not clearly stated]. Thereafter, the boy received thiamine supplementation. Following this, his condition rapidly improved and was weaned off supplemental oxygen. Within 3 days, he was discharged without any complication. Trehan I, et al. Axillary Calcification Due to Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Vaccination. Journal of Pediatrics 223: 218-219, 01 Aug 2020.
