Before 1999 Sally Peach 1 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2020
I can only remember the year 1999 because of Columbine, upper case. I would not know until 2011, —when I started medical school in Colorado—that columbine, lower case, is a beautiful wildflower growing throughout the Rocky Mountains. But I would never know, of course, what this flower looked like in the time before. Before before. But after. 1999 is the year, instead, that 6th grade girls could not carry expectant tampons because purses were banned in middle school hallways. 1999 is the year, instead, that my cheerleading team became the first cohort to walk through a metal detector at a JV middle school football game. The year that we learned to never again wear a trench coat. 2012, and I am more of an adult. No banned purses, no cheerleading skirts. And yet, still. Aurora, upper case.

I knew that aurora, lowercase, is a beautiful celestial phenomenon. But I will never know, of course, what this magical sky looked like in the time before. Before before. But after. 2012 is the year, instead, that police locked down our medical campus. 2012 is the year, instead, that I had to show ID to buy coffee at Udi’s, now Etai’s. The year that we learned to never again go to a midnight showing. And as soon as I see those Northern Lights, There is bound to be another after. Or perhaps Before before.
