Treatment failure: case report A 6-year-old girl exhibited treatment failure during treatment with carbamazepine and clobazam for epilepsy. The girl was admitted with a presumed diagnosis of generalised epilepsy (following an episode of myoclonic seizures and brief behavioural arrest without automatisms or post-ictal symptoms). Upon anamnesis, it was noted that the seizures started to appear from 3 years of her age (at a frequency of 3/30 days). She had been receiving levetiracetam, valproate, ethosuximide, topiramate and cannabidiol. Upon admission, a treatment with carbamazepine and clobazam [dosages and routes not stated] was initiated for the epilepsy. However, these therapies were found to be failed. A brain MRI revealed a nodular calcification located in the right midfrontal gyrus. After failure of carbamazepine and clobazam treatments, she underwent resection of the calcified lesion. After the surgery, she did not experience any seizure. It was determined that the calcified cysticercus (neurocysticercosis) might have caused the seizures in this patient. Schmid MF, et al.
