Cutaneous adverse reaction: 6 case reports In a study conducted in South Korea, 6 patients including 3 men and 3 women aged 40–67 years were described, who developed serious cutaneous adverse reaction (SCAR) during antiepileptic treatment with carbamazepine, phenytoin or valproic-acid for pain control or seizure prevention [routes, dosages and durations of treatments to reactions onsets not stated]. All the patients had been receiving antiepileptic treatment with carbamazepine due to pain control (n=4), phenytoin (n=1) and valproic acid for seizure prevention following cranial haemorrhage operation (n=1). They developed SCAR secondary to the ongoing respective antiepileptic treatment with carbamazepine (n=4), phenytoin (n=1) and valproic-acid (n=1). Therefore, all the patients were hospitalised and received intensive care, and the antiepileptic treatments were stopped. Subsequently, they all recovered from SCARs. HLA-B alleles were found to be positive for all the patients. Lymphocyte activation test was positive for 5 patients, and negative for one patient. Kim E, et al.
