Prolonged severe pancytopenia: case report A 67-year-old man developed prolonged severe pancytopenia during chemotherapy with carboplatin and vinorelbine for locally advanced squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The ex-smoker man, who was diagnosed with stage IIIC locally advanced squamous NSCLC one year following kidney transplantation had been receiving unspecified corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors for prevention of rejection. He started receiving chemo-radiotherapy, wherein he received one cycle of infusions of carboplatin and vinorelbine [dosages not stated]. However, he developed prolonged severe pancytopenia secondary to the first cycle of platinum-based chemotherapy with carboplatin and vinorelbine [time to reaction onset not clearly stated]. Therefore, the man’s further chemotherapy infusion was precluded. Then, he received a thoracic radiotherapy with curative intent, which was stopped due to cough with thoracic pain. He was diagnosed with oesophageal pulmonary fistula based on endoscopy and CT scan. Subsequently, an oesophageal self-expandable stent was inserted; however, he died due to massive haemoptysis [outcome of reaction not stated]. Drevet G, et al.
