Preface

Catheter ablation has revolutionized the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. Having started with AV node ablation with direct current for refractory atrial tachyarrhythmias at the beginning of the 1980s, the breakthrough for catheter ablation came with the use of radiofrequency current for ablation of accessory pathways in WPW syndrome. Modification of AV node conduction (instead of AV node ablation) in AV nodal tachycardias and ablation of cavotricuspid isthmus-dependent atrial flutter followed. With the advent of 3D mapping systems, more complex cardiac arrhythmias could be approached such as right and left atrial and ventricular tachycardias.
