The treatment of cardiac diseases has had several breakthroughs in the last 70 years, starting with the development of the cardiopulmonary bypass machine, as well as artificial valves and ventricular assist devices. The treatment of coronary artery disease dramatically changed when Andreas Gruentzig presented an early experience with catheter-based angioplasty in 1977. Roughly 10 years later, angioplasty was more common than coronary artery bypass grafting. For the last 60+ years, significant valve disease has been primarily treated with surgical repair or replacement. In 2002, Alan Cribier performed the world’s first transcatheter aortic valve replacement, dramatically changing the course of catheterbased valve therapies. Over the last 10 years, multiple studies investigating catheter-based aortic valve replacement, including the PARTNER and CoreValve Pivotal Trials, have led to approval for these devices in high-risk and inoperable patients with severe aortic stenosis. Trials with the MitraClip device have also led to approval in patients with primary mitral pathology at prohibitive risk
