Liver injury: case report A 55-year-old woman developed liver injury following concomitant administration of fluoxetine and celecoxib. The woman presented to an emergency department in March 2019 with icterus on the skin, dark-brown coloured urine and upper abdominal pain. She had recently been diagnosed with depression and had been prescribed fluoxetine [fluoxetine hydrochloride] capsules 20mg per day by her psychiatrist, which she had taken it for 3 months. In addition, she had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis for 3 years and had taken celecoxib capsules whenever she had a pain attack. Lately, she had an ache in both knees and took celecoxib capsules 200mg per day for 7 days. On the 5th day of celecoxib treatment, she showed reddish urine. Two days later, her urine became dark brown, and she reported severe pain in the upper abdomen. General examination showed jaundice in the skin and sclera. Her BP was 135/85mm Hg, and axillary temperature was 36.7°C. She was diagnosed with liver injury and cholecystitis. Laboratory results revealed significant damage to the liver and CT of the abdomen showed gallstones and cholecystitis. The woman’s treatment was discontinued due to the alleged liver injury caused by fluoxetine and celecoxib. She was treated with unspecified hepatoprotective and analgesic drugs. On the 3rd day of the admission, her abdominal pain decreased, but her jaundice persisted. However, on the 7th day after the admission, her jaundice reduced. On the 14th day after the admission, her jaundice resolved, some of her laboratory tests returned to the normal range, and she was subsequently discharged. Zhang H-M, et al.
