In this study, two new chitin derivatives were firstly synthesized. The products formed as a result of the reactions between chitin with 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalic anhydride and 4,40 -oxydiphthalic anhydride were abbreviated as C4B18NA and C440 OA, respectively. The structures of the chitin derivatives were illuminated by various spectroscopic methods (FTIR, NMR, and XRD), and it was thus confirmed that they were synthesized. The surface structures of the chitin derivatives were investigated by SEM technique. Then, two separate diodes were made using aluminum as metal, the chitin derivatives as interfacial layer, and p-Si as semiconductor. Some important properties of the diodes made were determined both in the dark and under an illumination of 100 mW/cm2. It was seen that the diodes are more ideal than most of the diodes where aluminum and p-type silicon were used as metal and semiconductor in their structures, respectively.

1 Introduction As is known, a diode is a circuit element which conducts current in only one direction. Also, it is known that there are many types of diodes, and one of these diodes is Schottky diode. Although only a semiconductor and a metal were used in the construction of classical Schottky diodes [1–3], both natural and synthesized organic and polymeric substances in addition to these substances were also used

in the construction of the recently made Schottky diodes [4–13]. This field, which we can call organic electronics, has been developing rapidly. Organometallic compounds and insulating materials were also used in the construction of Schottky diodes [14–18]. Of course, it is important for a diode being ideal, cheap, and made of substances which are friend to environment. It was determined that the diodes made in some of the studies referenced above are quite close to an ideal diode.

Chitin and its major derivative, chitosan, were widely used in many areas and systems (agriculture [19–22], artificial skin [23–25], chromatographic separation [26, 27], cosmetics [23, 28], drug delivery system [29–33], food processing [34–37], gene therapy [38–40], ophthalmology [41, 4
