When I was in graduate school, I studied public policy, family problems, and situations under which children were vulnerable to poor outcomes and sometimes, even harm. It was at this time that I started working for the Maine Child Death & Serious Injury Review Panel (MCDSIRP). This is a multidisciplinary team of professionals with a vested interest in the well being of children in their state, the circumstances that might leave children vulnerable to harm or even death, and the potential gaps in service delivery for such children and their families. I had been working with at-risk children in therapeutic settings such as residential care, specialized school services, and adults in a correctional setting. Thus, I was not completely ignorant to the problems that children and their families can face, but serving on the MCDSIRP was both validating and eye-opening at the same time.
