Neutropenia and renal toxicity: case report A 79-year-old woman developed neutropenia and renal toxicity during treatment with cisplatin and etoposide for gastric small cell carcinoma. The woman presented with two weeks of progressive dysphagia associated with vomiting, nausea, weight loss and a foreign body sensation in the throat. After thorough investigations she was diagnosed with stage IV pure-type gastric small cell carcinoma with liver and bone metastasis. She started receiving palliative chemotherapy with cisplatin and etoposide [routes and dosages not stated]. A month later, she presented with a back pain. She was found to have multiple bone metastases. Thereafter, she developed severe neutropenia and renal toxicity [durations of treatments to reactions onsets not stated]. Till that time she had received four cycles of chemotherapy. The woman’s therapy was changed to comfort care [outcomes not stated]. Author comment: "Patient completed 4 cycles of chemotherapy. Unfortunately with severe neutropenia and renal toxicity the patient decided for comfort care." Rathnakumar GR, et al. A case of gastric small cell carcinoma with metastases to bone and liver.
