Cisplatin/pregabalin Distal sensitive polyneuropathy and sleepiness: case report
In a report of two patients, a 71-year-old woman was described, who developed distal sensitive polyneuropathy during treatment with cisplatin for pharynx carcinoma and sleepiness during treatment with pregabalin [routes, time to reactions onset and outcomes not stated; not all dosages and indications stated]. The woman presented with chronic pruritus for 2.5 years with associated sensations of stinging and itching of the arms and legs. Three years prior to the presentation, she had received chemotherapy with cisplatin for pharynx carcinoma. Upon presentation, a physical examination showed signs of chronic itching, with linear excoriations and cutaneous nodules. Chronic nodular prurigo was suspected. She complained of parasite infestation. Diagnostic and laboratory tests did not show abnormalities. An electromyography confirmed the diagnosis of distal sensitive polyneuropathy secondary to cisplatin. Thereafter, pregabalin 100mg twice a day was added to the woman’s treatment with unspecified corticosteroids. Her chronic nodular prurigo symptoms resolved partially but, the delusional infestation was persistent. She was convinced that she was infested. Additionally, signs of depressive disorder were noted. Pregabalin was stopped due to insufficient anti-pruritic effect and sleepiness. She started receiving duloxetine. At that time, psychotherapy was started. At a follow-up after a few months of duloxetine therapy, the delusional infestation disappeared, and her skin condition and depression improved. Dervout C, et al.
