Preface
This book presents a conceptual underpinning for a science of coevolution that, I hope, can soon rightfully claim to produce knowledge for a sustainable development of society. My considerations are the result of more than 15 years of research practice in environmental research and sustainability science. But even before, environmental protection and nature conservation were close to my heart. One of my earliest memories is from the late 1970s, when I was collecting signatures at school for the abolition of commercial whale-hunting. Back then, I found it inexplicable, even a bit embarrassing how some of my teachers refused to sign the petition. Perhaps, it was this particular experience that taught me very early in my life that environmental activism alone—as important and valid as it is—will never be enough to maintain a diverse and complex web of life on earth.
