on the density of states. Many reviews of quantum wells or films,3"5 quantum wires, 6 " 8 and quantum dots6'9"15 are available. Quantum wells are produced by growth of high-quality epitaxial layers of semiconductors by molecular-beam epitaxy or metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. (See the article by Bimberg et al. in this issue.) Quantum dots are usually produced in one of two ways: (1) epitaxial growth and/or nanoscale patterning or (2) formation of nanosized semiconductor particles through colloidal chemistry. This article will deal only with the preparation, characterization, spectroscopy, and applications of QDs of III-V semiconductors produced via colloidal chemistry (see also the article by Alivisatos in this issue).
