ABSTRACT The fundamental processes governing the appearance of dissipation due to flux motion in superconductors are reviewed. The dominant thermally-activated resistive processes are discussed, and evidence for a sharp melting transition of the flux lattice is assessed. INTRODUCTION In the classic type II superconductors, Abrikosov[l] showed that we must distinguish three phases in the H-T plane: the normal state for H>Hc 2 (T), the mixed state for Hcl(T) < H < Hc 2 (T), and the Meissner state for H < Hci(T).
