Abstract Corallodiscus lanuginosus is recorded for the first time for southern India from the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh. The color photograph plates and detailed description of taxon had been provided for easy identification. Keywords Corallodiscus lanuginosus New generic record Southern India Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh
The family Gesneriaceae represents about 3400 species belonging to 148 genera, [1, 2] out of which India is endowed with 23 genera [3]. The Genera Corallodiscus comprises three species in India, viz. Corallodiscus bhutanicus (Craib) B.L.Burtt (from Darjeeling-West Bengal), Corallodiscus kingianus (Craib) B.L.Burtt (from Sikkim and Darjeeling–West Bengal), and C. lanuginosus (Darjeeling-West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Maharashtra, Bihar) [4–7]. Among three species of Corallodiscus, C. lanuginosus is recognized as a highly variable taxon [7]. While surveying the hills of Madugula (also known as Madgol hills) and Paderu, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the specimens of gesneriad were collected from rocky steep cliffs. After careful taxonomic examination and analysis based on literature, the specimens were

identified as Corallodiscus lanuginosus (Wall. ex DC.) B. L. Burtt. In the present study, we followed the revised and updated classification of Gesneriaceae proposed by Weber et al. [2] and Mo¨ller et al. [8] which was based on molecular phylogenetic evidence. The herbarium had prepared and deposited in Andhra University Herbarium (AUV), Andhra Pradesh, India. Our analysis revealed that the species is known only from few localities of Eastern Himalayas, northern Western Ghats, and it was also reported from Similipadar hills, Kalahandi district of Orissa in the northern Eastern Ghats recently [4, 5, 7]. Yet not been reported from southern India [9–21]. The present collection forms a new distributional generic record for the biodiversity of southern India from Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh. Moreover, the medicinal value, threats, and conservation status of the species were discussed. Corallodiscus lanuginosus is a perennial lithophytic rosette herb and usually grow up to 8 cm; taproot compressed, lateral roots compactly packed, fibrous, grows up to 15 cm long, slightly bitter. Stems compressed (up to 1 cm long), inconspicuous. Leaves radicle, crowded, alternate, and axillary buds slightly attached to base of the petiole, petioles thick and fleshy, base slightly expanded,
