PREFACE

The seventeenth Taniguchi International Symposium was held at Katata in Japan from 26th August till 31st August, 1985 under the title Curvature and Topology of Riemannian Manifolds. It was followed by a conference at the Research Institute for Mathematical Science, Kyoto University, from 2nd September till 4th September, 1985 under the title Problems in Riemannian Geometry in the Large. Seventeen mathematicians from France, Switzerland, West Germany, U.S.A. and Japan were invited under the support of the Taniguchi Foundation and they all gave talks in the Taniguchi Symposium. Besides the invited mathematicians from abroad there were six Japanese speakers who gave talks in the Kyoto Conference.

The

organizing committee was very happy to receive contributions from participants in both the Taniguchi Symposium and the Kyoto Conference.

A complete list of the participants in both the Taniguchi

Symposium and the Kyoto Conference and the submitted papers together with author's address will be given here.

The organizing committee

would like to express thanks to all the speakers who gave talks and submitted papers and lecture notes in this proceedings. All the participants would like to take this opportunity to express their hearty thanks to Mr.Toyosaburo Taniguchi for his support.

The Editorial Board of the organizing committee also like

to express their thanks to Professor Shingo Murakami who, as the coordinator of the Taniguchi International Symposia, guided them to the success of the symposium and conference.
