Foreword By Martin Lames Performance analysis in sports as a scientific discipline has been transformed by two recent trends. First, the advent of a new ‘culture’ of performance analysis in American professional sports, termed Sports Analytics, blurs the difference between scientific approaches and the perspectives of club management, media, and business. Being largely unnoticed up to now in Europe, and mostly restricted to the big five US sports, globalization no longer allows us to ignore these developments. Second, the potential of performance analysis methods shows no sign of slowing down its increasing impact on scientific as well as practical applications.
