A t a c o n s t a n t flow r a t e t h e r a t e of d e p o s i t i o n i s shown to i n c r e a s e with i n c r e a s e i n t e m p e r a t u r e up to a c r i t i c a l v a l u e a b o v e w h i c h t h e r a t e of d e p o s i t i o n e i t h e r r e m a i n s c o n s t a n t (for high flow r a t e s ) o r d e c r e a s e s (for low flow r a t e s ) . T h i s b e h a v i o r i s e x p l a i n e d in t e r m s of t h e t h e r m a l c o n v e c t i o n c o n t r i b u t i o n to m a s s t r a n s f e r in the r e a c t i o n s y s t e m . It i s shown t h a t t h e c o m p o s i t i o n of a l l o y f i l m s p r o d u c e d f r o m c a r b o n y l m i x t u r e s at t e m p e r a t u r e s g r e a t e r than 200~ (473 K) can be p r e d i c t e d to b e a p p r o x i m a t e l y e q u a l to t h e m o l a r r a t i o s of i r o n and n i c k e l i n the v a p o r p h a s e when t h e c a r b o n y l s a l o n e c o n s t i t u t e t h e v a p o r p h a s e . T h e s e p r e d i c t i o n s cannot be e x t e n d e d to s i t u a t i o n s w h e r e high d i l u t i o n of t h e c a r b o n y l s in a n o t h e r g a s i s u s e d , o r to d e p o s i t i o n t e r n p e r a t u r e s of l e s s t h a n 200~ (473 K).
