MRS-Europe has announced its plans to conduct both a Spring and a Fall Meeting in 1985, and is currently soliciting abstracts for papers to be presented at its Spring Meeting. Both the Spring and Fall Meetings will be held at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France, and are expected to provide a thorough international review of research techniques through contributed and invited oral and poster presentations. The Spring Meeting will be held May 13-15 and the Fall Meeting will be held November 25-29. Spring Meeting Call for Papers The Spring Meeting in Europe features three symposia, spanning theory as well as current research applications. The deadline for abstracts for each symposium is March 15. Symposium I on Energy Beam-Solid Interactions and Transient Thermal Processing will emphasize beam-solid interactions and formation of thin layers for device applications. Papers are sought specifically on fundamental aspects of energy beam interactions with solids; transient thermal processing of materials; laser photochemical processing and electron beam-surface interactions; fabrication techniques of thin layers of SOI and threedimensional integrated circuit technologies; impurity incorporation and associated instabilities; and defect formation and characterization. Invited speakers include D. Bauerle of Johannes Kepler University (laser chemical processing), G. Bomchil of CNET (formation and oxidation of porous silicon for SOI technologies), A.G. Cullis of the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (high-speed growth from the melt), D. J. Godfrey of GEC (electron-beam induced recrystallization of SOI films), D. Hulin of Ecole Polytechnique (silicon irradiated with femtosecond pulses), T. I. Kamins of Hewlett-Packard (MOS transistors in beam-recrystallized silicon films), M. von Allmen of the University of Bern (mestastable materials made by laser irradiation), and others. Abstracts for oral and poster presentations should be sent to chairmen V. T. Nguyen, CNET Grenoble, B. P. 98, F-38243 Meylan, France (phone: [76] 5140 69) or A. G. Cullis, RSRE, St. Andrews Road, Malvern, WR 14 EPS, England (phone: [0684] 52733, ext. 2509). Symposium II on Materials Under Extreme Conditions will explore the properties and production of materials under conditions such as microgravitation, high pressure, and low temperature. Topics expected to be covered include the effect of gravity on fluid flow in liquids (especially melts), crystal growth and solidification processes at reduced gravity; production of composite materials in space; phase transitions at high pressure; transport and mechanical properties at low pressure; and phase transitions at low

temperatures. Invited speakers at the symposium include J. M. Haynes of the University of Bristol and R. Nitsche of the University of Freiburg. Abstracts for oral or poster presentations on microgravity should be sent to chairmen H. Ahlburn, Universitat Hamburg, Fachbereich Erziehungswissenschaft, Von Melle Park 8, D-2000 Hamburg,
