Abstract&Driver fatigue detection is a term used to develop a nonintrusive system which can detect fatigue of the driver and issue a timely warning. The idea behind this project is to monitor the driver’s eyes using a camera in real time and to develop algorithm that can detect driver fatigue. Besides, the system also produces warning output in a form of sound once fatigue is detected. Keywords Eye · Eye blink · Fatigue

Introduction

The ever increasing of automobile industry nowadays has made the vehicle more powerful, easier to drive and control safer energy efficient, and more environmentally friendly. Majority of the accidents caused today by cars are mainly due to the driver fatigue. Driving for a long period time causes excessive fatigue and tiredness which turns makes the driver sleepy or loose awareness. With the rapid increase in the number of accidents seems to be increasing day to day. Therefore, a need arises to design a system that keeps the driver focused on the road. The purpose of this project is to develop driver fatigue detection that basically measures a driver’s fatigue through face detection. The focus is based on designing the system that will monitor driver fatigue in real-time. An example is Percentage of Close and Open (PERCLOS). This detection can be done using a sequence of images of eyes as well as face and head movement. The observation of eye movements M.H. Abdullah · K.J. Raman · A. Azman() ·S. Yogarayan · H.A.A. and its edges for the detection will be used. Devices to detect when drivers are falling asleep and to provide warnings to alert them of the risk, or even control the vehicle’s movement, have been the subject to much research and development. Each year hundreds of people lose their lives due to traffic accidents around the world. Unfortunately Iran ranks first in the world in terms of road fatalities and each year approximately thirty thousands of fellow countrymen lose their lives in these events. The role of human factor in accidents cannot be ruled out. According to national statistics in 90 to 95 percent of car accidents in Iran, human factor plays a pivotal role. In general, the driver fatigue accounts for 25 percent of accidents and approximately 60 percent of road accidents result in death or serious injury. In a study by the National Transportation Research Institute (NTSRB) in which 107 random car accidents had been selected, fatigue accounted for 58% of the all accidents.
