r e c e n t r e v i e w s~'~ h a v e c o n c l u d e d t h a t t h e only e s t a b l i s h e d type of n u c l e u s f o r m i c r o v o i d s i n d u c t i l e f r a c t u r e ( m i c r o v o i d c o a l e s c e n c e o r M V C ) of n o m i n a l l y single-phase m a t e r i a l s is t h e inclusion o r impurity/precipitate particle. A possible m e a n s o f t e s t i n g t h i s c o n c l u s i o n w o u l d be a n e x h a u s t i v e m e t a l l o g r a p h i c s u r v e y4 s e e k i n g a g r e e m e n t b e t w e e n t h e p a r t i c l e d i s t r i b u t i o n in t h e s t a r t i n g m a t e r i a l , a n d t h e obs e r v e d s i z e ( o r , e q u i v a l e n t l y , s p a c i n g ) of h a l f - v o i d s o r d i m p l e s on t h e d u c t i l e f r a c t u r e s u r f a c e . S i n c e i n a l l c a s e s r e p o r t e d t o d a t e the f r a c t u r e d u c t i l i t y ( r e d u c t i o n of a r e a , R A , o r t r u e f r a c t u r e s t r a i n , el) i s r e d u c e d by h y d r o g e n , the q u e s t i o n a r i s e s a s t o whether a specific relation e x i s t s between red u c e d ductility a n d d i m p l e size changes. Such a r e l a t i o n w o u l d be e x p e c t e d t o h a v e i m p l i c a t i o n s f o r t h e m e c h a n i s m ( s ) of h y d r o g e n e m b r i t t l e m e n t , %1°,~6 a t l e a s t f o r c a s e s of M V C .
