Preface
The present volume consists of eleven keynote papers presented at the Earthquake and Tsunami conference jointly organised by the World Council of Civil Engineers (WCCE), the European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) and the Turkish Chamber of Civil Engineers (TCCE) to be held on 22–24 June 2009 in Istanbul, Turkey. Natural disasters have always been an area of prime concern for all of the three organising institutions. The proposal of TCCE to jointly organise a conference on earthquake and tsunami was therefore enthusiastically accepted by WCCE and ECCE. The event was realised by the Organising Committee comprising professors from the leading Turkish universities and TCCE representatives. The International Advisory Board consisting of the representatives of the three organising partners discussed and set the organisational principles. It was unanimously agreed by both the Board and the Committee to set the scientific standard of the conference through well qualified, internationally renowned keynote speakers. Each of the six half-day sessions would be initiated by two keynote presentations relevant to the subject area of the session. The objective of the conference is to contribute to the mitigation of life and material losses in earthquake and tsunami through improved civil engineering practice. The conference scope is confined to civil engineering related disaster mitigation activities. Consequently, the keynote papers included in the present vo
