T h e t a b u l a t e d d i l a t o m e t r i c v a l u e s and the p l o t t e d c u r v e s a r e not at v a r i a n c e . T h e A1/1 t e r m u s e d f o r F i g s . 5 and 6 is the t o t a l a m o u n t of c o n t r a c t i o n due to t e m p e r i n g at any t e m p e r a t u r e ( c o r r e c t e d to 100~ d i v i d e d by the o r i g i n a l length. F i g . 5 u s e d t h r e e c u r v e s i n s t e a d of s e v e n p o s s i b l e c u r v e s so that t h e t r e n d s c o u l d b e o b s e r v e d . F i g s . 5 and 6 w e r e d r a w n without the minor bumps w h i c h would have s e r v e d only to confuse r a t h e r than i n s t r u c t . The d i s c u s s e r s mention t h e p o s s i b i l i t y of r e t a i n e d a u s t e n i t e b e i n g p r e s e n t in o u r 0.47 pct c a r b o n s t e e l . R o b e r t s et al. 36 found only 0.1 p c t r e t a i n e d a u s t e n i t e in a 0.39 p c t c a r b o n s t e e l a f t e r liquid n i t r o g e n r e f r i g e r a t i o n (our s a m p l e s w e r e a l s o t r e a t e d in t h i s m a n n e r ) . Only at 0.62 pct C did t h e y find 2.0 p c t r e t a i n e d a u s t e n i t e . W e d i d , h o w e v e r , have t h e r e t a i n e d a u s t e n i t e c h e c k e d by the U. S. Steel F u n d a m e n t a l R e s e a r c h L a b o r a t o r i e s w h e r e it w a s found to b e u n d e t e c t a b l e by t h e i r X - r a y t e c h n i q u e s . 13 F u r t h e r m o r e , the t r a n s f o r m a t i o n of any r e t a i n e d a u s t e n i t e d u r i n g d e f o r m a t i o n would h a v e r e s u l t e d in a l e s s d e n s e m a t e r i a l f o r the d i e d r a w n b a r s and a n a n t i c i p a t e d g r e a t e r c o n t r a c t i o n d u r i n g s u b s e quent t e m p e r i n g (opposite to t h e effect r e p o r t e d ) . We do not f e e l that the p o s s i b l e c l o s i n g of h y p o t h e t i c a l " m i c r o c r a c k s "
