Rectus sheath haematoma: 4 case reports In a retrospective observational study of 17 patients diagnosed with rectus sheath haematoma between December 2012 and December 2016, four women including one elderly woman and one 80-year-old woman* [not all ages stated] were described, who developed rectus sheath haematoma during anticoagulant therapy with rivaroxaban, enoxaparin sodium or overdose of warfarin [routes and dosages not stated; not all outcomes stated]. Case 1: An 80-year-old woman developed rectus sheath haematoma during anticoagulant therapy with rivaroxaban: The woman started receiving anticoagulant therapy with rivaroxaban and subsequently developed rectus sheath haematoma, requiring hospitalisation. Hence, rivaroxaban was discontinued, and she was treated with paracetamol and whole blood. Case 2: An elderly woman developed rectus sheath haematoma during anticoagulant therapy with enoxaparin sodium: The woman was receiving prophylactic anticoagulant therapy with enoxaparin sodium and subsequently developed rectus sheath haematoma, requiring hospitalisation. Hence, enoxaparin sodium was discontinued, and she was treated with paracetamol and whole blood. Eventually, she died of hypotensive shock. Case 3: A woman developed rectus sheath haematoma following overdose of warfarin: The woman was receiving anticoagulant therapy with warfarin. However, she had an overdose of warfarin and subsequently developed rectus sheath haematoma, requiring hospitalisation. Hence, warfarin was discontinued and she was treated with paracetamol and whole blood. Eventually, she died of hypotensive shock. Case 4: A woman developed rectus sheath haematoma following anticoagulant therapy with warfarin: The woman was receiving anticoagulant therapy with warfarin and subsequently developed rectus sheath haematoma, requiring hospitalisation. Hence, warfarin was discontinued and she was treated with paracetamol and whole blood. Her INR was within the therapeutic range. * Patient demographic details were obtained via personal communication with the author. Uzer F, et al. Anticoagulant therapy and rectus sheath hematoma.
