Our goal was simple: to request from the Foundation air fare and per diem for approximately 20 Latin American scientists to attend a workshop entitled the 'Systematics and Evolutionary Ecology of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes' that would follow the 1982 ASIH (American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists) meeting. We had presented an initial outline for our proposal to a number of colleagues in .J une of 1980 at the ASIH meeting at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. The steering committee for the workshop, consisting of a dozen senior scientists in systematics and ecology of tropical freshwater fishes, met and encouraged us to proceed with submitting a proposal. In addition , the Field Museum in Chicago was making a contribution in order to facilitate this group of scientists. In short, we felt our objectives were correct, we had the backing of the scientific community, and our request was a modest one.
