Experimental Research on Thermal Energy Storage of a New Type of PCM Heat Exchanger Zhu Xiaoqin1, Hu Jin1, Li Nanjing1, Wang Panpan1, Lu Jiansheng1, and Noureddine BenAbdallah2 1 Kunming University of Science and Technology, Kunming, 650093, China, People's Republic of 2 Dalhousie University, Halifax, B3J2X4, Canada ABSTRACT Thermal energy storage with phase change materials is one of the most efficient means of storing available energy because of its advantages such as providing higher thermal storage capacity, lower storage temperature, isothermal operation and less storage space. Thermal energy storage property of a new type of PCM heat exchanger was investigated, in which its main body is based on the traditional structure of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, and is full of PCMs (CaCl2·6H2O) in the tubes. The hot air at the temperature of 40°C was selected as a flow medium, and the temperature measurements of the test points were carried out at the inlet and outlet of this kind of PCM heat exchanger. The experimental results showed that this kind of PCM heat exchanger could store thermal energy from the hot fluid by means of PCMs in the tubes. Its prospect in engineering applications such as the recovery and utilizations of industrial afterheat or waste heat etc was also analyzed and forecasted. INTRODUCTION Thermal energy storage systems have been widely used during the recent years in many engineering applications, such as solar energy utilizations, space heating, air-conditioning, waste heat recovery and energy saving devices. Thermal energy storage techniques play important roles in conserving available energy and recovery utilizations of the industrial afterheat or waste heat. Therefore, the researches and applications of thermal energy storage techniques have been one of the main investigations in the field of energy[1-4]. For the purpose of the effective utilizations of thermal energy, people have been exploring and developing better or new means of thermal energy storage. Traditional means of thermal energy storage is sensible heat storage which includes the use of large volumes of water or massive rock beds. Therefore, the capacity of thermal energy storage mainly depends on the volume of thermal energy storage material and its temperature. One important technique for energy storage is thermal energy storage with phase change materials, namely latent heat storage, which stores thermal energy by means of latent heat of phase transition. Compared with sensible heat storage, it has the advantages such as higher thermal storage capacity, lower storage temperature, isothermal operation and less storage space[5]. Consequently, The reasearches and utilizations of thermal energy storage techniques are very valuable and significant.

STRUCTURE AND EXPERIMENT A shell-and-tube heat exchanger is a technical device in which heat exchanges between hot and cold fluids by the walls of tubes[6]. Its main actions in various industrial productions are to make heat transfer from the hot fluid at the higher te
