Table I. The main chemical composition of the filtered natural groundwater PVA2 (measured values) and the complete composition of the synthetic groundwater OL-SR (calculated values) before adding nickel, ferrous iron and sulphide. The pH was measured under N2. N.a. = not analyzed. N.d. = concentration is below the given detection limit. Component

(grade 6.0) and brought to the laboratory where it was immediately taken into a glove box with N2 atmosphere (02-< 1 ppm, -28 °C). The PVA2 water was then filtered in the glove box (0.45 gm Gelman AquaPrep capsule) using a slight N 2 pressure and then stored in the glove box until later. The synthetic groundwater was prepared in the glove box. Both of the waters were stored in the ambient glove-box conditions. Table I shows the chemical composition of the two waters. For the natural filtered groundwater, only the measured values for the chemically relevant elements are given, while for the synthetic water the complete theoretical composition is presented. Details concerning the synthetic groundwater and its preparation are found in [2]. EXPERIMENTAL Briefly, the nickel solubility experiments were performed under N2 atmosphere (02 -
